Legend has it that the Chincoteague ponies arrived on the island after escaping a ship wreck off the Virginia coast about 400 years ago. Today, the herd is kept at about 150 ponies. Any more the ponies would have a negative impact on the fragile island ecosystem. Each July, the ponies are rounded up and swam accross the channel where the young stock auctioned off to raise money for the fire department.
When do you need to put a sheet on a horse? If you ride late in the afternoon and it is cool, put a sheet on. Competition horses do not need tired muscles to be cold. Think of major league baseball pitchers. They are always keeping that million dollar arm covered and warm. Rain? Unless it is very warm, put a rain sheet on. You will keep the ugly winter hair at bay as long as possible. If you clip your horse you definitely need a wardrobe… but you already knew that anyway...
