The Thoroughbred racehorse Northern Dancer was foaled in Canada in 1961. He was a small horse and was offered for sale as a yearling for $25,000. No one was interested in him. So the owner shipped him off to the racetrack to be trained.
Northern Dancer stood 15.2 hands high and looked more like a Quarterhorse than a Thoroughbred. Having problems with quarter cracks in his feet, he did not race until his until August of his 2 y.o. year. He started winning, proving he was a force to be reckond with.
As a three y.o., he won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stake, but missed the Triple Crown by coming in third in the Belmont Stakes. When Northern Dancer retired from racing, he had 18 strarts, 14 wins, and earnings of $580,806. Chump change for what he would later earn as a sire.
His first season he stood for a mere $10,000 at stud. Then his offspring strarted winning. Northern Dancer had horse of the year champions in both North America and Europe. In 1970 he was syndicated for 2.4 million dollars. In 1983, one of his yearlings sold at auction for 10.2 million dollars.
Northern Dancer remained productive as a sire until he was 26 years old. He was pensioned on the farm where he stood at stud, "Windfields" in Maryland. Northern Dancer died at the age of 29.
75% of all racing thoroughbreds today trace back to Northern Dancer.

Plans for a Wooden Do It Yourself Hay Feeder for Horses
This is my handy dandy Dad's plans for a hay feeder. It is several years old in the picture and I like it so well I asked him to draw up his plans for it. It is moveable, very safe for your horses and the tray beneath catches the hay to keep it off the ground. Generally they pull the hay out and eat it off the tray so it is not going to get in their eyes or get breathed in, so it's healthier for them.
What you will get, is two pieces of sturdy heavy stock letter sized paper with with the plans on it, and a materials list. It will come in the mail in a photo mailer. The plans are very detailed, east to read.
